Project Overview

In 2013–2014, HARIROD Group of Companies successfully completed a landmark infrastructure project funded by UNOPS, involving the construction of key airport facilities in Bamyan Province. The project included the development of a Passenger Terminal Building, a Utility Building, and a Fire Station at Bamyan Airport—a strategic regional hub vital for civilian air transportation, emergency services, and humanitarian access in central Afghanistan.

This project was designed to enhance the airport’s operational capabilities, safety, and service capacity, aligning with international civil aviation standards and supporting regional development efforts.

Scope of Work

As the main contractor, HARIROD was responsible for the full lifecycle of construction activities, including:

  • Passenger Terminal Building:
Construction of a modern, functional terminal facility equipped with arrival/departure areas, check-in counters, administrative offices, public waiting zones, and restrooms.

  • Utility Building:
Development of a dedicated building for airport infrastructure systems including backup power generation, water storage, electrical panels, and maintenance space.

  • Fire Station:
Construction of a fully equipped, ICAO-compliant fire station, complete with truck bays, rapid response equipment space, crew quarters, and communication facilities.

  • Site Development:
Landscaping, parking areas, access roads, walkways, drainage systems, and fencing to ensure complete functionality and safety of the airport compound.

  • Utilities Installation:
Electrical and mechanical systems, plumbing, and integration of emergency and communication systems in all structures.

Challenges & Execution

Working in Bamyan, a mountainous and remote region, presented logistical challenges including material transport, seasonal climate limitations, and labor availability. HARIROD overcame these by deploying an experienced project management team, local workforce integration, and close coordination with UNOPS field engineers.

Key achievements included:

  • On-time and on-budget delivery of all project components.

  • Full compliance with UNOPS standards and Afghan Civil Aviation Authority regulations.

  • Strict adherence to health, safety, and environmental (HSE) protocols throughout the construction period.

  • High satisfaction ratings from the client and stakeholders during final inspections.
